Just the latest of a string of great Canadian acts in this start of a new millennium (in this case from Montreal, thus the French album and song titles), We Are Wolves come in strong on their first album, Non-Stop Je Te Plie En Deux.
The album opens with the drum machine kicking “Little Birds,” highlighted by an emergency siren-like synth over an aggressive punk lead, setting the tone for much of the album. Similarities to other dance-punk, new wave-ish bands like The Rapture, Killers, Arcade Fire etc. are immediately suggested in the screechy vocals, synth blasts, and disco drumming. Over the course of the album, We Are Wolves make their sound slightly more gritty than those standards, highlighted by the excellent rhythm section and creative use of synths.
That being said, there is not much variety on this album. While the songs engage on a visceral level, the sound does not captivate for very long. There is more punk to this sound than dance, which is good considering the musical trends these days. If you aren’t already sick of the current “in” sound, you should give this album a try, as its merits do indeed outweigh the complaints.
