The nominees are out for Spin Magazine's Band of the Year. Arranged in a 32-band bracket a la NCAA madness, you'll find the acts divided up into such categories as Brit Rock, Underground, Indie, and All-Ages. You'll find such acts as Bloc Party, The Oranges Band, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and Smoosh. And while you won't find more conspicuous acts like Bright Eyes, Death Cab, or New Pornographers, we have to hand it to Spin on a list well-done. Not because the list is an exercise in obscurity, but because Spin only nominated bands previously featured as Band of the Day on its site. Those bands might be further from the radar's epicenter, sure, but they've already earned their keep. |
