While most people of the music industry were schmoozing with the stars, us lovers of the electronic music scene, and writers of online magazines, were at the BPM Magazine Grammy party; and there was only one star - his name, Sasha, one of the biggest electronic DJs in the world.
I expected to see a grand performance due to the occassion, but instead, it seems that having a room full of industry insiders rather than music fans, seemed to put a damper on the show. At 12 a.m. Sasha came on, but the packed house was already emptying itself out; people had meetings to go to, work to attend to early in the morning, and kids to go back to.
Sasha's entrance on the stage did change the atmosphere though, and for the first 20 minutes, you could say he rocked the house, as much as it could be rocked anyway. Sasha teased the crowd with complicated arrangements while dropping delicious break beats that got the few that were there to party, to well, party. And for a while the crowd went wild.
I've seen the best of the scene; Tiesto, Oakenfold, Maas - but I had yet to see the great Sasha. His performance did not dissappoint, I can see where he gets his reputation; a combination of dense beats, great teases, and an ability to make you want to dance all night long. Unfortunately this was not his night; a good show is not made by a DJ alone, and the crowd just wasn't feeling it. I'm not sure they would have felt it regardless of who was up there.
Even Sasha was barely moving around, poised to the side, slowly bopping his head. The set, for me anyway, went on for another hour, but he definitely got tamer with time, and I started to remember that this was trance music after all, which can get a little, errm...monotonous. A few sounds were interesting here and there, and had the room been alive, I would have probably felt it, but this little writer had to go home. Work and such.
